Abstract

In the context of the increasing population aging in China, long-term care insurance is a key measure to actively deal with the nursing needs for disabled elderly people. This article is based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) database and uses the propensity score matching-difference in differences (PSM-DID) method to study the impact of long-term care insurance on the health satisfaction of middle-aged and elderly people in China. Research shows that the implementation of long-term care insurance policies significantly improved the health satisfaction of 8.2% (P<0.01) of middle-aged and elderly people. After controlling covariates and fixed effects for propensity score matching, the policy implementation effect was 7.5% (P<0.01), which was still confirmed after a series of robust tests. Through the heterogeneity analysis, it was found that the policy effect has rich heterogeneity in terms of age, place of residence, and level of child care. Long-term care insurance has a significant positive impact on the health satisfaction of middle-aged and elderly people in rural areas, middle and young age groups, and those with almost no child care. The research conclusion of this article can be the reference when accelerating the expansion of long-term care insurance pilot cities in China and improving the fairness of institutional guarantee.
